RED ANDES REIGNS SUPREME CHAMPION AT RIHS 2008
|
 |
With the sun finally shining, a great day was had by all at the RIHS at Hickstead. The classes were full and judges Sue Rawding & Miss J Grummit commented on the quality of ponies and riders. Spoilt for choice, their winners in some huge classes were the prolific winning show hunter pony Millpond Look at Me. The best traditional/native type being the big moving Secret Weapon. In the larger plaited pony class, competition was tough and in the end it was the charming Lucinda Sims riding Soulbury Spot On. This 10 year old pony had only been purchased by his new owners (The Brunksill Family) and when we spoke with her she was still trying to take the win in! He then went on to take the Pony Championship.
The large traditional class was won by the 6yo Longdon Domino ridden by Jill Wormall. This minimally marked cob has previously been successful at HOYS and has completed the double by clinching the RIHS winner.
Judging the horses were John Conifey (ride) and V. Millwood (conformation). John Conifey had his work cut out in the heat. He also commented to me that he had enjoyed some outstanding rides and there wasn`t much between them.
Next on was the Lightweight Ridden Horse Class - highly contested and was eventually won by Shybont Master Class, with his half sister Shybont Bean Dance in 2nd place. Both of these horses were by Wendy Bartlett`s stallion Masterpiece.
The middleweights were won by Red Andes - the eventual overall Supreme. This truly wonderful horse was faultless throughout and was superbly ridden by Jayne Webber. Only 5 years old and out this year, his record is impeccable. This horse really did have an old head on young shoulders.
As the day closed, the last class was the heavyweights - again, some tremendous exhibits forward. In the end it was the ever consistent show cob Tapestry who clinched the spot over the very popular Jasper Bailey who gave a superb gallop. Tapestry is another one today that has just been purchased and her new owners must be thrilled!
So the RIHS Supreme Champion is Red Andes for 2008 - a great advertisement for coloured horses. We wish both him, his owner - Elaine Place, and Jayne Webber all the best for the RIHS overall supreme of show.
